Doing Business - UK holds sixth place in world rankings

The UK has held on to sixth place in the World Bank’s league table of nations where it is easiest to do business.

The World Bank has published its latest Doing Business report which ranks 178 economies on the ease of doing business. The rankings are based on 10 indicators of business regulation that track the time and cost to meet government requirements in enterprise start-up, business operation, trade, taxation and closure.

The report shows the UK in sixth place overall in the league table. The UK has not improved its position since the previous year and has been overtaken by Denmark.

The top ten countries in the World Bank’s league table are:
1. Singapore
2. New Zealand
3. USA
4. Hong Kong (China)
5. Denmark
6. United Kingdom
7. Canada
8. Ireland
9. Australia
10. Iceland
Others in the Top Twenty are Norway, Japan, Finland, Sweden, Thailand, Switzerland, Estonia, Georgia, Belgium and Germany.

Out of the other major EU countries, Netherlands came in at 21, France 31, Portugal 37, Spain 38, Italy 53 and Greece 100.

At the Labour Party Conference in Brighton today, John Hutton the Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform told his audience that the government wants ‘to make Britain the best place in the world to do business’.
