DTI scraps leaflet on new regulations

23 10 2004 United Kingdom

A new guide to recent changes in employment law has been pulped and reprinted due to errors, reports The Times

The Department of Trade and Industry has produced a leaflet describing new regulations governing procedures to resolve disputes in the workplace, but it was withdrawn and reprinted at a cost of £200,000 after errors were noticed, says The Times today.

Under new regulations introduced at the beginning of this month, employers must follow strictly the procedures when a dispute is brought to an employment tribunal. The leaflet made an error in describing the rights of employees to representation during the disciplinary process.

Employers complained that the new leaflet was misleading, says The Times, so it must now be reissued.

A spokesperson for the DTI said, "The guidance was meant to be read in conjunction with information on our website."

The TUC and business organisations have complained that the DTI does not allow time for proper consultation before bringing in new legislation, resulting in new procedures that are over-complicated and a burden to owners of small businesses.
