Focus moves from start-ups to growing businesses, says the Times

The newly appointed minister for competitiveness, Stephen Timms, has announced a shift of focus from start-ups to businesses with growth potential
Stephen Timms, a minister in the new Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform or ‘BERR’, has announced a name change for the DTI’s Small Business Service and a shift in focus away from start-ups.
BERR has replaced the Department of Trade & Industry and Stephen Timms has the competitiveness portfolio which includes small businesses. The DTI’s Small Business Service is to be renamed the Enterprise Directorate, he revealed, reflecting an emphasis on enterprise and growth.
Making his announcement, Stephen Timms told the Times that, while his department will continue to encourage people to start-up businesses, the new focus will will be on encouraging the growth of existing small businesses.
He pointed out that only 25 per cent of small-business owners have an ambition to take on more staff, leaving 75 per cent who do not.
The Enterprise Directorate. has policy responsibility for the Business Link network, research about small businesses and access to finance funds.
